Although our residence in Dickens County was relatively short, we made life-long friends and still feel we are a part of the county as our son, Eldon, who married Jean Eldgredge lives in McAdoo and our grandchildren, Benny and Debbi Ball and great grandchildren, Blake and Elisha Ball live in Spur. Our other granddaughter, Cindy lives in San Antonio, but was raised in McAdoo.I was born in Carbon, TX (Eastland County) to Rev. and Mrs. S.H. Williams. In 1925, I moved to Atwell, TX (Callahan County) with my folks. There I met Joella Gattis. We were married July 11, 1926, and lived in Cisco where I worked for J.P. Webster and Son Wholesale Grovery. In 1929, our son, Eldon Lee was born. About 1932 we moved to Breckenridge where Eldon started to School.
We moved to Dickens County the first time in May 1942. I worked for H.O. Wooten Wholesale Grovery in Spur. We lived on North Parker and Eldon attended junior high school for the two years we lived there. We then moved to Big Spring for one year.
In 1945 we moved back to Dickens County when we purchased the Star Grocery and Station from the Ben Eldredges in McAdoo. The grocery was located on the corner across the street from the school ground. We moved into a small house just north of the store and Eldon graduated from high school in McAdoo. When we came to McAdoo there were two stores, two blacksmiths, a feed store, two gins, two stations, a cafe and a barber shop. Some of our groceries were brought in by truck, but twice a week we carried eggs to Lubbock and purchased fresh fruit, vegetables, and some staples. Hours were long but the stores were the gathering places of the community, especially on Saturday night. In 1952 we moved across the street into the Mercantile Building and in 1953 sold the store to Millard Smith.
We moved to the Hurst-Bedford area in 1958. This was our home for 25 years. In April 1983, we moved to Crosbyton to be near our son who still lives in McAdoo.
