Dear Mrs. Lee,
 
	I am writing at this time to extend my heartfelt sympathy to you on the
recent death of your son, Private First Class Ocie H. Lee, on Okinawa,
Ryukyu Islands on May 24, 1945.  I realize that there is nothing that
anyone can say to lessen your grief, but as your son's company commander
I should like to tell you of the circumstances surrounding his death,
in the hope that this knowledge will relieve some of the uncertainty that
you must feel.
 
	Ocie was an automatic rifleman in the company, and in that capacity he
aided materially in the success of his company in combat.  At the time of
his death, your son and the other men of his platoon were on a patrol in
the vicinity of Shuri.  When they neared their objective, a high ridge,
enemy riflemen opened fire, and Ocie was hit.  He died instantly and
suffered no pain whatsoever.  His funeral service was conducted by a
Protestant Chaplain, and was in all respects a military one, as I am sure
he would have wished it.  His grave is located in the 77th Infantry
Division Cemetery on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands; Grave 653, Row 19, Plot 1.
 
	I considered your son one of the finest soldiers in the company, and his
death brought me a great deal of personal sorrow.  Although newly
assigned to the company, Ocie had made many friends, by whom he was
admired and respected.  If there is any further information that I can
give you, do not hesitate to write to me.
