J. Vic Allen was born October 17, 1924 in Brazos, Texas, the second of two sons to Clearance V. and Edna V. Allen. Soon thereafter the family moved to Crowell where his father had the Chevrolet Agency. In the early 30´s the family moved to Spur where his father opened Allen Auto Supply across the street from the old Caraway Chevrolet Agency. Times were tight and we lived in the building behind the auto store until mother bought her home at 701 N. Parker. Dad made his living with the store, but his first priority was the preaching of the gospel. He helped in the establishment of several congregations of the Church of Christ in the vicinity of Spur. Dad died November 23, 1973 and mother December 18, 1977. Both are buried in the family plot in Spur Cemetery.
My brother, Dupree, graduated in 1937 and went into the Navy for around 15 years, coming out as a Chief Storekeeper. He is a Millwright Superintendent, and will soon be retiring from Brown and Root Construction Co.
I graduated in 1942, and while attending Tech went into the Navy in October 1943. Got out of the Navy to return to Tech, graduating in 1947. Was the Chief Auditor for the Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C., and doing graduate work at George Washington University when recalled to the Navy in January 1950, and was discharged as LtCDR, SC. SUN in 1959. In December began my association with New York University which continued until my retirement as Associate Director of Financial Aid in 1979.
I married Arline D. Houghton, CDR, NC, USN of Webster, Mass. July 9, 1972. We first met in 1951 when we were both stationed in Corpus Christi, and didn´t want people thinking that we were rushing into anything.
While taking my annual physical at the University in November 1978, I suffered a massive heart attack. Informed that I would be unable to work again, we came to Kerrville on a visit in March and purchased our home which was still under construction. Officially retired on disability from New York University on June 29, 1979, and left New York City that night - bag and baggage, moving van, et-al for our new home in Kerrville which we are enjoying immensely.
