John and Bessie wee married December 17, 1911 at Brad, Texas. They moved to Spur in 1919 along with their two sons, John and Alfred, ages six and four. Soon they added a dairy to their farm, which was located 1 1/2 miles west of Spur, adjoining the Experiment Station.John and Bessie were devout Methodists. John was a member of the Board of Stewards, and Bessie was president of the Women's Missionary Society for 25 years.
Their sons, John Jackson and Alfred graduated from Spur High School and were both active in Boy Scouts, track and football.
The most memorable Scout Merit Badge was cycline. They rode their bicycles to Jayton, Texas on gravel and dirt roads and returned for a 50 mile trip to earn this merit badge. They enjoyed and laughed about this trip many times in later years.
John Jackson's work was in engine mechanics. He resided in Fort Worth. He had three children: Owen, Dorothy and Clyde. John died in 1985.
Alfred graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in marketing and finance. He had 2 children: Jan and Jon. Alfred has retired an lives in Houston, Texas.
John C. Payne died in 1958, and Bessie died in 1986. Both are buried in the Spur Memorial Cemetery.

Payne died in Spur Memorial Hospital, with a heart attack at 5:05 p.m., March 16, 1958. He has been a resident of Dickens County since 1919 and a steward in the Methodist Church in Spur since 1921.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie, two sons, Jack Jackson, Ft. Worth, Texas; Alfred Henry Payne, Dallas, Texas; a brother, A. G. Payne, Shallowater, Texas, four sisters; Mrs. Edd Moxley, Andrews, Miss Sue Payne, Greenville, Mrs. Jim Bailey and Mrs. Amelia Crow of Wolfforth, five grandchildren and one great grandson.
Active pallbearers: Jack Beeson, Hobert Lewis, Rob Simmons, Lawis Lee, Jack Rector and W.F. Gilbert.
Honorary pallbearers named are: Coy McMahan, Levelland, Earl Knight, Caddo, Marvin Wright, Carlsbad, NM, Lester Ericson & Judge Boedeker of Lubbock, A.Z. Hayes, G.H. Sneider, Seamon Reynolds, L.L. Teague, E.C. Clinkscales and C.H. McCully, all of Spur and all the stewards of the First Methodist Church of Spur.
