Graveside military services were held for Sgt. Joe B. Whitener, Jr., 21, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 13, 1951, with Chaplain T. O. Sillmen of Reese Air Force Base officiating.
Whitener, flight engineer on a B-29 was killed when his plane crashed into a hanger while landing in Japan on October 14, 1951. He was born in Spur on October 4, 1930, and attended the Spur schools. Whitener was converted early in life and joined the Baptist Church.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. C. W. McCormick of San Mateo, Calif and his father Joe, B. Whitener of Spur.
Pallbearers were Kelley Marsh, Joe Jeffers, Durwood Woodward, Earnest Kearney, Larry Boothe, and V. D. Pippins.
Burial was in the Spur cemetery under the direction of Campbell´s Funeral Chapel.
