Biography

What began as a temporary move to Spur to sell some property they owned turned into a permanent retirement residence for Glen and Maurine Williams. Glen graduated from Spur High School in 1946. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Navy where he spent 3 1/2 years when he returned to Spur.

Back home in Spur, Glen went to work for Dickens County Telectric Cooperative, and he met Maurine who had moved to Spur from Lamesa after graduating from high school there. Her father owned C & W Electric, and she worked for Reagan Motor Company. Later she went to work for her father until his death.

In 1953 the Williams moved to Lamesa where Glen went to work for Texas Electric and Maurine worked for some of Lamesa's car dealershps. The Williams eventually relocated to Fort Worth where they lived until Glen's retirement.

The couple had owned property in Spur since 1951 and decided to come back in 1987 to clean it up and prepare it to sell, though Maurine claims they came back to save their marriage.

"Glen took early retirement and was getting in my way." said Maurine who ran a ceramics business out of her home in Fort Worth.

"We made a deal," said Glen, "The mornings were hers and the afternoons were mine.

And it didn't take Glen long to discover the Sur Golf Course and reaquaint himself with old friends. It also didn't take him long to get involved in his hometown community. He served on the City Council for seven years, six of those yearas as Mayor. He also served on the Dickens County EMS board.

Th Williams were one of the first couples to return to Spur for their retirement years, a trend that continues to grow in popularity. "I think we started the 'coming back'," said Maurine. The Williams were happy to return to Spur.
