After years of work-related moves, Betty and Skip Wyatt settled in Spur. Betty and Skip both graduated from Spur High School in 1954. Betty started to school there in the first grade, but Skip, a resident of Kent County, didn't enter the Spur Schools until 7th grade.Upon graduation, Skip went to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where he received his B.A. degree in Range Management and Animal Husbandry. Betty went to Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM where she received her B.S. in mathematics. Their paths crossed again in 1960 and the romance began, leading to a wedding on March 5, 1961. At the time Betty was employed by Shell Oil Company in Roswell, NM and Skip was working on the Swenson's Chimney Creek Ranch in Spur. They moved to Las Cruces, NM in September 1961 where Skip started a 33 year career with the Bureau of Land Management. Both of their children were born in Las Cruces.
Skip's job kept them on the move from Las Cruces to Albuquerque, then Rawlins to Pinedale, WY, Washington, D.C., and finally Reno, NV where Skip became manager of the Wild Horse and Burro Facility.
Betty worked for various engineers, surveyors, and mining companies as they moved from town to town. While Skip had given up his lifelong dream of being a rancher to support his family, his long wait was rewarded when he inherited, purchased, and now leases some property in Kent and Dickens counties. He was able to retire and now works as a rancher.
Spur was always home to Betty and she was thrilled to go back and be able to enjoy the last few years with her parents, D.J. and Marie Dyess, before their deaths. Betty enjoyed family and friends (especially some near her age who had already moved back to Spur) and became very active in the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce and Palace Theater Project. She did not stay retired long and worked part time for Attorney Tom J. Brian.
