East Bell County
Genealogical Society

c/o PO Box 1493 , Temple, TX 76503-1493

The East Bell County Genealogical Society (EBCGS) is based in Temple, Texas. It is one of two genealogy societies in the county. The EBCGS was organized in 1989 following a series of classes at a local college that brought the genealogical community together. It is a successor to the Temple Genealogical Society. The EBCGS was chartered as a Texas non-profit corporation in 1991.

ACTIVITIES. The purpose of EBCGS is to promote interest in genealogy and local history and perpetuate the memory of our ancestors and their contributions to the heritage of our country. Activities of the society include:

Partner society of TSGS. The EBCGS is a partner society of the Texas State Genealogical Society (TSGS) and several members have served on the board of the state society.

Library acquisitions. Society funds are used to purchase books, maps, and microfilms that are donated to the Temple Public Library in Temple, Texas. The current emphasis is on expansion of the map collection.

Problem-solving workshops. The society periodically conducts one-day workshops that are open to the public. Emphasis is on problem-solving through the use of resources available in the library.

Preservation projects. Society volunteers are preparing the early wills and probate records of the county for microfilming. This involves unfolding the old papers, placing them in archival folders, and indexing the contents.

Research assistance. The society can respond to requests for research assistance only on a very limited basis. Letters requesting help in identifying ancestors in the local area are referred to volunteer members who prepare a reply.

Society Newsletter. The EBCGS Newsletter is distributed to members and visitors during the monthly meetings. It includes library acquisitions, new members, programs being offered in the Central Texas area, and queries.
