In September 2003, President Sylvia Smith announced that Ellis County Genealogical Society's Board of Directors had voted to include under its umbrella the newly formed group, African-American History of Ellis County, as a Special Interest Group (SIG). This group led by Easter Butler Fleming and Sylvia Smith will meet on the 4th Saturday of each month, 10:00 AM, in the Ellis County Museum. At present, their focus is to list names of families, businesses, schools, churches and organizations of the past. Oral history interviews with the oldest African-American citizens in Waxahachie, Ennis, Italy, Milford and other communities is another priority for the group. Ultimately, this information will be shared and published in SEARCHERS & RESEARCHERS.
