COL. HENRY WATTERSON.
-----
Lectures At The Grand on "Money
And Morals."
-----
The lecture by Col.
Henry Watterson at the Grand Opera House last night was heard by about 150
people.
The lecture was along the lines indicated
in the subject "Money and Morals" but covered a wide range of
discussion. The speaker is firmly set against the tendencies of the times
to commercialism and he delivered some strong arguments against that tendency.
He is a vigorous and forceful talker, but
his lecture contains little to produce laughter, being almost throughout
pitched upon different lines to that of most of the platform orators.
In the audience were old time patrons, and
readers of his paper, the Louisville Courier-Journal, which for nearly half a
century has been conducted by Watterson. The Colonel is possessed of a
strong individuality and carries it with him to the platform as when wielding
the editorial faber.
He was introduced by Hon. Cullen F.
Thomas, who came to Marlin for the expres (sic) purpose of hearing the
lecture. Mr. Thomas referred eloquently to the inspiration he received
from his early reading after the master mind and pen of Col. Watterson.
Col. Watterson has recently, through his
paper, made some very strong strictures against New York's "400" and
this has served to focus the minds of millions upon him at this time.
