The
purpose of these
Eddy area school webpages is to present, through photographs, a visual
history
of the early schools that existed in both the Eddy and Bruceville
areas, from
the late 1800's thru the mid 1950's, and to provide the viewer with
photos of some
of the students, teachers, and faculty that made up the population of
these
schools. Also represented on these pages, are early photos of the
school
buildings and adjoining structures that were present at each of these
school
sites. All of these schools were actually located in McLennan County,
Texas,
but a large number of the students attending them lived in nearby Falls
County.
The effort to locate and document early photos
and details about these schools is an ongoing effort and the contents
of this
page represent a work-in-progress. As in any type of research, it is
critical
that the information presented is as accurate as possible. With that in
mind, I
would encourage anyone who has additional information about any or all
of the
schools identified here, to contact Falls County
Coordinator
at the Falls Co. website. This also applies to any errors that are
detected in
the material presented on this webpage.-rlh
BRUCEVILLE-EDDY
SCHOOL

ca1929 - 1957
Sometime
around
1928-29, the residents of Eddy and Bruceville decided there should be a
single
consolidated high school to serve both communities. Construction was
begun on a
new two-story stucco building, located about halfway between Eddy and
Bruceville, on property acquired from Mr. W. B. Appleby. This building
was
completed by the schoolyear 1929-30 and the Bruceville-Eddy Independent
School
District became the first rural consolidated school district in
McLennan
County, Texas.
When
this high
school was first built, it housed only the high school students,
(grades 8 thru
11), that were transferring there from Bruceville, Eddy & other
area
schools. At the beginning of the 1936-37 school year, the population of
the new
B-E school was increased with the addition of 7th grade students from
the
outlying schools. Within a short time, the remaining elementary
students at the
different rural schools in the area were relocated to the
Bruceville-Eddy
consolidated school. By 1949, the small rural school districts of
Blevins,
Hoolia, Shieldes and Woodlawn had become a part of the Bruceville-Eddy
ISD.
After
the
schools in both Eddy and Bruceville had ceased operation, both school
buildings
were torn down, with the bricks from the schools being used to build a
new
gymnasium on the campus of the Bruceville-Eddy school, just west of the
school
building. This school building remained in use until the summer of
1957, when
the structure was razed to make way for a new, single-level building
that would
become the new Bruceville-Eddy school.
