TWO NEGROES TAKEN
IN FOR SHOPLIFTING
~~~~~
Two negroes were taken in Friday night by
the officers for shoplifting. They were in at Hodges Dry Goods Co's looking at
some hats. When C. E. Cloy, who was waiting on them, turned his pack for some
purpose, one of the negroes slipped a Stetson hat under his coat and thereafter
both the negroes lost all interest in what Mr. Cloy was telling them about the
hats and prices, and soon started to leave the store, in the mean time the
salesman missed one hat from the stack on the counter and followed the darkies
to the mouth of the stairway leading down to the first floor. At this point he
thrust his hand under the coat of one of the darkies and brought out the hat.
The negroes then took to their heels but were finally overhauled by the
officers.
