Monta Phelps

 

     MARLIN-Monta A. "Pops" Phelps, 94, passed away Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Lake Shore Village Nursing Home in Waco. He was the oldest of five children born to Walker W. and Ada Wiggins Phelps May 23, 1906, in Chilton in Falls County. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Greg Brumit and the Rev. D. F. Barrett officiating. Interment at Cego Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Adams Funeral Home.

 

     He met and married Mattie R. McKee Aug. 22, 1927. She preceded him in death Oct. 8, 1992, after 65 years of marriage. They lived and farmed in Falls County until 1950, when they moved to Waco. He worked as a carpenter's helper several years before going to work at Baylor University. He built his home in Robinson in 1963. He retired at 65 and later worked part time at a washeteria in Robinson. He was a member of Kendrick Lane Baptist Church.

 

     He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a sister, Maggie Spivey, and a brother, Bernard Phelps.

 

     Surviving are a daughter, Vila Mae Gibson and husband Ruben of Eddy; two sisters, Emme "Tommie" Painter of Waco and Offa Behnke of Waco; two granddaughters, Vivian Neal and husband Larry of Lorena and Elizabeth June Hallaxs of Battle Creek, Michigan; five great-granddaughters, Diana Gerik and husband Darrell of Robinson, Lana Sauer of Uless*, Tracy Horton of Lorena, April Leutwyler of Battle Creek and Jennifer Leutwyler of Grandberry**; three great-great granddaughters; two great-great grandsons; and a devoted friend and caregiver, Genie Smith and Frances Fernie.

 

     All our thanks to Genie and all the staff at Lake Shore Village of Waco and all Hospice Caregivers as well as other great friends, Brady Carr, The Richard Seahon family and Gene and Hogie Karls of Robinson.

 

     Pallbearers will be Wayne Phelps, Randy Phelps, David Phelps, Ray Spivey***, Tim Stewart and Charles Stewart.

 

     Memorials may be made to Cego Cemetery Association, Rt. 1, Box 530 Chilton, Texas or I Love My Church, First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 208 Eddy, Texas 76524 or Hillcrest Hospice Care of Waco.
