Fannin County TXGenWeb By 1860 the
family was living in Smith County, Texas in the
Omen Community which was near the present
day town of
Arp. Sarah Jane died in 1860
and George, Sr. married her
sister Elizabeth Heath Lowry.
Elizabeth had three daughters, Frances, Elizabeth and Ellen.
The family moved to Kaufman County sometimes after their marriage
in 1863. By 1870 they are shown on the Wood County Census. They
are living in Rains County by 1880. George Sr. died in 1881
and is buried in Pilgrim Rest #1 near Emory, Rains County,
Texas.
Thomas Beverly married Nancy Telezine Kell{e}y in
Rains County, Texas January 20, 1889.
Nancy was born
in Red River County, Texas to David
Alexander Kelley
and Hira Whitaker on February 8, 1872.
Little is known
about her parents.
Thomas
and Nancy moved to Fannin County, Texas
sometimes after 1897 and before the
1900 Census.
It is thought they came with
her step sister, Lizzie Haseltine.
Hassie Bearden and her
husband I. H. Henry Harrison.
Her sister Marissa was married to Charley
Higginbotham
and they lived in Fannin County at
one time. Charley
died in 1906 and is buried in Forest
Grove Cemetery
near Telephone.
Sometimes
in the 1920's Thomas Beverly moved
his family out to West Texas to the
Hockley County area.
Several of the children lived
and farmed in that area
at one time. Some moved on to
New Mexico to farm and
raise their families.
The children
of Thomas Beverly Melton and Nancy Telezine Kell{e}y are:
1. Laura Gertrude Melton born
in Rains County about 1890.
She married Lonnie Melvin Alexander
July 25, 1908 in
Fannin County, Texas. They raised
a large family.
Three of the daughters still
live in Fannin County at this
writing. Laura passed away in
Fannin County in 1977 and
is buried in Forest Grove cemetery
next to Lon. Their
children are:
James Beverly Dulin, Lonnie
Olan, Melvin Oran, Urath Celina, Robbie T.,Itis, Ima Jo, Royce Dale and
Tommie Lucille.
2. Gastford Latideon Bud Melton
was born July 31, 1891
in Rains County, Texas. He served
in W. W. I. taking his
training at Fort Sam Houston in San
Antonio, Texas.
Serving later in England, France, Belguim
and France. He married Bonnie Black Key in Lovington, Lea County,
New
Mexico July 19, 1936. They spent
most of their lives in
Terry County, Texas. Bud passed
away June 28, 1956 in a VA hospital in Big Spring, Howard, County, Texas.
Bonnie passed away in 1996. Both are buried in Brownfield,
Terry County, Texas. Their two
children were Katherine
and Bruce Thomas.
3. Lewis Avon called Aven by his
family was born July 27,
1893 in Rains County, Texas.
He married Nora Mae Curry
from Fannin County December 17, 1917.
He farmed
in Levelland, Hockley County, Texas
for many years. After his retirement they moved to Snyder, Scurry
County, Texas. Nora died in Snyder 1962. Avon passed away in
Baird,
Callahan County, Texas in 1970.
Both are buried in Snyder, Texas. The children of Avon and Nora are:
Lewis Winifred,
Alta Pauline and Billy Don.
4. Harley Melton born presumably in Fannin County, Texas at birth. Thought to be born in the area of Elwood, Fannin County, Texas.
5. Olin, twin to Harley is also thought to have been born and buried in the Elwood community.
6. Harless Washington Melton was
born in Rains County,
Texas February 8, 1897.
Harless never married. He was
in W.W.I but never left Fort Sam Houston
in San Antonio.
He nursed the influenza victims.
He passed away
September 23, 1981 in Bonham, Fannin
County, Texas
and is buried in Forest Grove Cemetery.
7. Marley Alexander Melton was
born October 8, 1898 presumably Fannin County, Texas. He never married.
He was in W.W.II. He died November
27, 1947 in a VA
Hospital in McKinney, Texas.
Burial in Forest Grove
Cemetery with military honors.
8. Berta Telezine Bertie Melton
was born February 19, 1900
presumably in Fannin County, Texas.
She married Thomas N. Cole. Bertie died in 1979 in Bonham, Fannin
County, Texas. Both she and Tom are buried in Soper, Oklahoma.
Their
children all preceded them in death.
They were:
J. T., Freda Hope, and Jack.
9. Thomas Bert Melton, twin of
Berta was born February 19, 1900. He married Alpha Lee Blackwell
April 13, 1933 in Portales, Roosevelt County, New Mexico. They lived
and farmed in Milnesand, New Mexico
for many years. The
date of their deaths is unknown
but both are buried in
Portales, Roosevelt, New Mexico.
Their children are:
Webster Thomas (W.T). and Wilma
Louise.
10. Edah Ileta Melton was born December
21, 1901.
Presumably in Fannin County,Texas.
She married (1)
Royal Cline. He was a federal
guard on Alcatraz
Island and was murdered in 1938 in
an attempted
prison escape. Edah is buried
in Baird, Callahan
County, Texas. The children of
Edah and Royal Cline were: Lucille, Naomi
Dell (Tommie), Juanita, T. Burel and Arel V, twins.
Edah married (2) Jimmy Hunt, (3)______Hindeman,
(4)Otto Best.
11. George Vernon Melton was born 1904 in Fannin County, died 1922 and is buried in Soper Oklahoma. He never married.
12. Ima Cleo (John) Melton was born
February 9, 1905 in
Fannin County.She married Cecil Orville
Benge in Donnell,
Texas December 22, 1926. They
farmed in the Clauene
Community in Hockley County, Texas
prior to moving to Lea County, New Mexico. Cleo died in 1996 and
both she and Cecil
are buried in Levelland, Hockley County,
Texas. Their children are: George Thomas, Melton Carlton ,
Ima Jean, Benny
Joe and Lynda Sue.
13. Robbie Norene Melton was born June
18, 1910 in Fannin County. She died October 7, 1911 of "summer
complaint"
and is buried in Forest Grove Cemetery.
14. Ira Melton was born June 18, 1910.
There is no other information regarding him. It is assumed he died
at birth.
No grave has been located for him.
