I am still working on the land records - Hugh Braly bought a lot of land and also sold some to Robert Shaw, McFarland and others in the area. I have been trying to follow it for a while now."
View of Braly Family headstones
Another view of the Braly Family headstones, including Malissia Francis Adams.
Malissia Adams' stone is the top center stone pictured above the tree. She was the dau. of John A. and Sidney Elizabeth (McCrary) Adams. Hugh Braly was appointed guardian of Malissia and her two older siblings in 1848. Malissia's sister, Mary Elizabeth (Adams) married George W. Fry of Ladonia and are buried in the Bourland Cemetery.
Old cemetery transcriptions indicate 3 Braly family members in the cemetery, but research by Narris Braly, who visited the cemetery in 1964, indicates there are 8 Braly family members interred in the cemetery. Information prepared and handed down from other researchers also indicates more Braly family members.
Malissia Adams is the oldest known burial in the cemetery; however, there appears to be a buried marker next to hers. This marker was also documented by Narris Braly, but the name was unknown. As research information indicates the Braly's were buried in chronicalogical order by year of death, the unknown marker was likely the first burial.
The 3 Braly members from the old transcription listings are likely;
Braly, Josiah M. (Joseph Braley carved on stone) - photographs taken around 1980 indicate he is next to Malissia closest to the tree.
Braly, Elijah M. - served as Sgt. Co. E, 31st Texas Cavalry, C.S.A.
Braly, Jr, Hugh Lee - born 1836 (possibly 1835 or misread on old transcriptions as 1835) was killed at the Battle of Mansfield in Louisiana according to a 1913 newspaper article. If so, the headstone for Hugh might have been a memorial.
Also believed to be buried in the cemetery are;
Braly, Hugh Lee Braly 19 Aug. 1799 - 3 June 1867 - son of John Braly, Jr. and Mary (Carson) Braly. John Braly, Jr was the son of John Braly (1720 - 1798) and Sarah (Carruth) Braly buried Rowan Co., NC.
Braly, Nancy (McCrary) 7 Feb. 1809 - 15 Oct. 1862 - dau. of Elijah and Elizabeth (Kimsey) McCrary. Elijah McCrary is buried in the Bourland Cemetery.
Braly, Melvina 26 Aug 1831 - 8 Aug. 1888 - dau. of Hugh and Nancy Braly, never married.
Hugh and Nancy Braly married in Howard Co., MO on March 25, 1827, and moved to Fannin County in 1844. He purchased land from Thomas Stallcup, two days after Stallcup had been granted the land from the Republic of Texas. In 1847 he purchased additional land on Pilot Grove Creek which originally belonging to William Hart and 80 acres on the North Sulpher from Andrew Wilson. He also purchased land on the Sulpher fork located east of Benjamin Bourland. Hugh and Nancy were charter members of the Bethel Society of Presbyterians which was formed in 1846 by citizens of Fannin and Lamar County. One source indicated this was the first church in the county.
In addition to Elijah, Hugh, Joseph, Melvina mentioned above, they had the following children:
Braly, Hillion "Levi" (1828 - 1915) married Martha Bourland. Levi served as Lieutenant and Captain of Company E, 24th and 25th Texas Cavalry, C.S.A. They are buried in the Leonard Cemetery. Martha was the dau. of Benjamin Bourland.
Braly, John Neely (1832 - ) private Co. E, 31st Texas Cavalry, C.S.A.
Braly, Mary Ann (1837 - 1877) married Kenneth Elijah Bain.
Braly. Benjamin Franklin (1839 - ) married Margaret Moses. He was Lieutenant of Company F, 11th Texas Cavalry, C.S.A.
Braly, Nancy Elizabeth (1841 - ) married Joseph B. Stephens, married W. G. Johnston
Braly, William Thomas (1845 - 1915) married Mollie Kimsey.
The family spelled the name "Braly", but it was frequently mispelled; Braley, Bralley, Brawley, Brawly.
