Notes of Delba by Billy Grimes
I talked to Grace Evans Thompson on August 12, 2001 about the abstract to her grandfather Evans land. She said that she had given it to her daughter when she deeded the land to her. Her grandfather Evans owned the Watkins survey . Mr. Watkins was the father of Dr. Lewis Watkins who practiced medicine at Delba. The Watkins family bought the land from the State of Texas. She told me that the original Delba school was located on the northeast comer of the Wailtins land. The school was moved to west of the Delba gin and saddle shop and store. The gin and store was located on the Blevins land just across the road form the store and the new school was built one half mile west of the store. They had two acres of land one acres on the west side of the road where the school building was located and one acre on the east side of the road that never had a building on it.
The original site of the Delba school was two miles east of the new school and one and one half miles east of the gin. There was a store originally at the east site that was owned by J. W. Crews. That store burned in the late 1870's and he moved his business to Leonard when the railroad was established. He purchased the two lots on the southwest comer of the Leonard Square and put in a mercantile and grocery store there.
The original Delba school shared their building with the Methodist Church. The Methodist church was moved to Leonard when the railroad came through.
On the northeast corner across from the school and Methodist Church the land was owned by the Stovail family and they deed one acre of land to the Chirstinan Church. The Delba Cemetery was located just east of the Christian Church lot and was originally owned by the Stovall family. I suppose they deeded the land for the cemetery.View Deed
