This info from Ed Flowers
" James Wilson
Ray (The maternal grandfather of William Edward Flowers and father
of Margaret Emma Ray who is buried at Virginia Point Cemetery with
her husband and his parents.) was a Baptist preacher and is buried near
Savoy in a cemetery where his church was located. The cemetery has been
called Caney Cemetery because of it's location on Caney Creek. And was
also called Coontown Cemetery by others because of the name of nearby property
owners (Donors of the land?).
"James Wilson RAY came
from Virginia to Kentucky and
settled near Tompkinsville
at a bend in the Cumberland known as "Turkey Neck Bend"."
"Elder
James W. Ray is a native of Monroe County, Kentucky, and was born February
24, 1821. His father, John Ray, was born in Cumberland county, Kentucky,
about 1790, was a farmer and a Baptist preacher, moved to Louisiana in
1838, and died there in 1842. His wife bore the maiden name of Luvica
Ball and was born in Monroe county, Kentucky, became the mother of fifteen
children, and died in 1859."
" James W. Ray
is the fifth of the children born to his parents, and was reared in Morgan
county, Illinois, where his parents resided during the interval elapsing
between their relocation from Kentucky to Louisiana; where Mr. Ray resided
until 1848, when he then went to Texas, where he owned nine hundred
acres of fine land, although he started in life a poor boy."
" In 1841
James W. Ray became connected with the Primitive Baptist Church, and after
1853 he devoted the greater part of his time to the ministry. In 1842 he
married Mary Gibson, daughter of Thomas and Mary L. Morris Gibson, of Tennessee,
and to this marriage were born seven children--Lavaria S., Mary A., Lucretia
J., Margaret E., Sarah M., Alonzo and an infant that died unnamed. Mrs.
Ray died in 1857, and in 1858 Elder Ray married Martha Sturgis of
Morgan county, Illinois; Bell and Jefferson D. were the result of this
marriage. The third marriage of Elder Ray was with Miss Elizabeth Sikes,
a daughter of Jacob and Mary B. (Sloan) Sikes, of North Carolina; Elizabeth
(Sikes) Ray, however, was born in Fayette county, Alabama. Five children
were born to this last marriage-- James A. John, Annie C., Eliza and James
W. In 1884 Mr. Ray was stricken with paralysis, owing to excessive brain
stroke and never fully recovered from the shock.
