When he enlisted in the Confederate Army, in 1861, he enlisted under
the name of MASSAGEE. this spelling appears on all of his military records. It was not until he took his Oath of Amnesty on October 12, 1865 that his name appears as MASSEGEE. He was in several battles, including the Battle of Shiloh.
b. In Grayson County Texas, a deed in which Smith and his wife, Sarah, sold a certain tract of land. The name is recorded eight times as MASSEGEE.
In Fannin County, TX, found a deed dated May 19, 1866, in which Smith sold
his interest in a certain tract of land. his name is recorded five times: Three
times as MASSAGEE, once as MASSEGEE, and once as MASSGEE. Smith
signed the deed, Smith I. MASSAGEE. d. In JACK County, TX, found a deed dated July 18, 1873, in which Smith bought a certain tract of land. His name is recorded three times. Each time it is spelled MASSAGEE. I hope you will be able to find the graves of the above listed. They were documented before the graveyard was destroyed.
