- Ivanhoe
is north of Bonham
almost within spitting distance of the
Red River. Settler began moving to the area called Hawkins Prairie
shortly after the War between the States & by 1890, theyhad a post
office in town and daily stage connections to Bonham. Growing, the residents
decided they needed a better name for their village than Hawkins Prairie,
so Captain E. J. Dupree suggestedthe town be named after his favorite literary
hero. Written by Sir Walter Scott.
Today, there is winery in Ivanhoe & a Christmas tree farmall trying to keep Ivanhoe fromgoing the way of many small Texas towns into extinction. They seem to be well on the way to avoiding stagnation.
