" When Daniel
and Mary Caroline came to Texas they settled in the
Dial area. Daniel purchased land
there for $1.00 per acre and it's thought
he bought 160 acres. "
"Daniel
and Mary Caroline died one day apart in two different years.
It is believed they died on Dec. 31,1878
and Jan. 1, 1879. John Walter
Williams stated he was nine years old
when they died. After their
death, Elizabeth Jane (Betty)
Williams Covington inherited the land
and raised her younger brothers. "
"Ida
B. Covington Smith (wife of James Andrew Smith), Elizabeth Jane's
daughter, inherited the land from her
mother. Ida B. and James Andrew
Smith are both buried in Dial Cemetery."
"Claude
Smith, son of Ida B. and James Andrew, inherited the land
from his parents. My father,
Walter Theodore Williams, says that the land
was still in the family as late as
1950. This was told to him by Charlie
Covington. At the time, Minnie
Covington was living on the property. I
wish I knew if it was still in the
family, or at least where it was located. I
have been to the courthouse and searched,
but found nothing. Since
Fannin County does not have a cross-indexing
method for property, it's
almost impossible. "
