"Hon. William J. Hood was
born in Kingston, Tennessee, November 3, 1841,and is a son of James W.
Hood, who was
born in Knox County ,
Tennessee, in 1814, and who now
resides in Roane county,
in the same state. James W. for
a long time followed steamboating,
but of late years has been engaged in farming and mercantile business.
He married
Ann M. Bailey, who was
born in Hawkins County, Tennessee,
about the year 1825, and
still survives, the mother of ten
children, of whom W.J.
is the eldest.
William J. Hood was reared in Tennessee on a farm, and in 1861 joined
the Confederate army, Company A. Twenty-Sixth Tennessee infantry, and fought
with that command until after
the fall of Fort Donelson,
after which event the remnant of his company joined Company H. Third Confederate
Cavalry, and Mr.Hood was made sergeant-major of the regiment. In his command
he served until 1864, when he was sent to North
Georgia on a recruiting
expedition, with Captain T.P.
Edmonson, and they succeeded
in organizing a battalion
from fragmnets of broken-up
regiments, and with this battalion
he served as adjutant
until the close of the war. He then went to Carter's Quarter, Murray County,
Georgia, remained there till 1866, then went to Hartford , Kentucky, and
for a year or more moved around the country and finally settled in Texas
and began farming on a small scale, but now owns nearly four hundred
acres of good land. In
November 1888, he was chosen to
represent his people in
the State Legislature.
February 14, 1867 Mr. Hood married Miss Hattie Johnson,
a daughter of James and
Susan Johnson, of Tennessee. To this union there were born four children,
named as follows -
Lula, Edgar, Walter and
Stella .
Mrs.Hood expired April 7, 1878: April 10, 1879 Mr. Hood married Miss Mary
Deatherage, daughter of John E. and Hannah Campbell Deatherage of Texas,
and this union has been blessed with four children-- Hallie, Pearl, Muncie
and Lellah.
Mr.Hood is an Odd Fellow
and a Knight of Honor and a
Granger."
Note; Mr Hood am much
of his family were buried originally in
the Hood Cemetery north
of Whitewright. Later they were removed to Oak Hill in Whitewright, Texas
