At 3:30 a.m. Thursday, February 1910 only one building in the block was saved from the flames of disastrous fire that took the lives of Ray Farmer of Forney and a Mr. Cowell of Kemp. The fire broke out in the kitchen of the City Hotel and quickly spread to adjoining buildings, destroying the I.O.O.F. Hall, Wilhoits Music Store, a grocery store, Griffin & Venner's Drug Store and a Ball and Gilkey's Gents Furnishing Store. The flames were checked in time to save the Farmers National Bank, the last building on the block.come.
