Here are a couple of pictures of the Callahan family. I still don't know where the picture of Grandpa on the Ostrich was taken, but it was a magical picture to a little kid who didn't know who the old fellow was for over fifty years.

Grandpa Andrew Jackson Callahan on the Ostrich.
Andrew Jackson Callahan was born near Greenford, Mahoning Co., Ohio,
on November 17, 1837. He enlisted
as a private in Co. D, 1st Reg't, California Volunteer
Infantry, on August 28, 1861, at Presidio Barracks.
In November, 1862, along with others who felt "harshly
treated" by their commanding officers, he deserted
at Mesilla, New Mexico Territory. After traveling to
New Orleans by foot, he re-enlisted under the name John Callahan
(Calaghan. Callaghan) in Co. C, 1st Reg't Texas
Volunteer Cavalry on February 3, 1863. He was declared
missing inaction near Clinton, Louisiana, on March 7, 1865,
paroled as a prisoner of war from Benton Barracks, Missouri, shortly
thereafter, and mustered out on June 2, 1865 at St. Louis.
After employment by Abner Ross in St. Louis, he
moved with that family to Lockhart, Texas,
and married Elizabeth Alice Ross (daughter of Abner and Tabitha Boucher)
in Caldwell Co., Texas, on November 6, 1867. They would eventually
establish a homestead for farming and ranching on the Henderson Branch
of the Guadalupe River, near Ingram, Kerr Co., Texas. Alice died
there November 6, 1891. A. J. Callahan died on the John and
Kate Walker Ranch, Kerr Co., Texas on January 12, 1928. Their nine
children are pictured. I have also determined that the picture
of Grandpa Callahan on the ostrich was taken probably at Sawtelle,
California, about 1910 or 11.
