Hunter, Thomas Russell
Funeral services for Thomas Russell Hunter, 78, of Dorchester will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, March 15 in the First Baptist Church of Gunter. Rev. Danny Miller will officiate. Burial will follow at Collinsville cemetery with Bill Arrington, Tim Arrington, Barry Harris, Forrest Fritcher, Gary Gressett, and Doug Farrer serving as pallbearers. Mr. Hunter passed away on Thursday, March 13 at his residence west of Dorchester. He was born April 15, 1929 to Walter Douglas and Zina McDonald Hunter at the same home place of his passing.
Russell graduated from Dorchester High School in 1947. He attended University of Texas at Arlington and later graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock. In 1951 he was called into the military where he served in the United States Air Force for two years, serving a majority of his time stationed in England. After his military service, he returned home and worked on the family farm with his brother Ed. In 1963 he married Betty Mullins of Gunter, his wife of 44 years and together they had three children.
In 1968 Russell began his teaching and coaching career at Gunter High School. There he taught history and coached baseball, basketball, and football until he retired in 1986. "Coach Hunter" went beyond the normal duties. He opened up his house and home where many of his students spent countless hours playing games and hanging out. He was more than just a coach, he was a friend, mentor, and a role model. Russell touched many lives leaving lasting impressions.
After retiring from education in 1986, Russell began his second career working at Wal-Mart in Sherman where he was a cashier for 21 years. At Wal-Mart he met many people and enjoyed getting to visiting with them all. Many times he was recognized by his customers outside of Wal-Mart, and they would simply want to say "hi" or how much they enjoy going through his line. However; Russell never lost sight of what was important to him, and that was family. During his time at Wal-Mart he was able to have flexible hours allowing him the time to spend with his family and friends. Russell particularly enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete in whatever sport they were playing.
Russell is survived by his wife Betty, 3 children Rusty Hunter and wife Raymie of Sherman , Linda Mazerolle of Sherman, and Tommy Hunter of Tioga. Seven grandchildren, Darby, Dakota, Garrett, and Hadlie Hunter of Sherman and Meghan, Mackenzie, and Mason Mazerolle of Sherman. Brothers John Robert Hunter of Gunter, Ed & wife Jo Hunter of Dorchester, and sister Alice & husband Paul Malone of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Benton Hunter of Dorchester, sisters, Isabelle Buck of Kansas and Ruby Nell Wallace of Colorado Springs.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday at Waldo Funeral Home. --- Waldo Funeral Home - Funeral Listing, Sherman, Tx
