William L. 'Bill' Ashburn is about age 20. He is still working for Arch Currie
and teaching school in the "weaning cabin" at Lonesome Dove near
Grapevine. The weaning cabin was the original Austin/Ashburn homestead in North
Texas. It is where the boys stayed before marriage and during their schooling,
kind of a frontier bachelor pad. He is "interested" in Mary Eliza but
she is only 15 at this time.

Bill is about age 30. By this time he is the father of five and
living at Preston Bend on the Red River on the border of Indian Territory or
Oklahoma. If our information is correct, he was a half-breed Cherokee, his
mother being full blood. He sports a mustache in this picture which is odd for
an Indian, but in no other pictures does he have facial hair.
|By this time, Mary Eliza Currie Ashburn has had five children: Annie, Martin, Sarah, Sophie, and Paul.|
