Truck collision kills two
MUNSTER -- Two men, one from Collinsville, were killed in a two-truck
collision on rain-swept Highway 82 five miles west of Muenster early Friday
morning.
Killed were 36-year-old Archie Umsted of Collinsville and 21-year-0ld
Richard Walterscheid of Muenster. Several calves loaded in a tractor-trailer
rig driven by Mr. Umsted were killed in the wreck and later destroyed because
of injuries. Both drivers apparently were killed upon impact and
pinned inside their vehicles, according to DPS resports (9-22-78 handwritten)
Mr. Umsted was driving a tractor-trailer rig west and Mr. Walterscheid
was headed east in a pickup truck during heavy rain at 3:30 a.m. when the
vehicles collided. Following the crash, the pickup wound up on the
south side of Highway 82 and the tractor-trailer wound in a creek off the
north side of the highway, according to reports. Several of the 40
calves in the rig were spotted running loose by rescue workers arriving
at the scene.
Services for Mr. Umsted, a truck driver, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday
at the Keel Funeral Home chapel in Gainesville. Burial will be at
Mount Zion Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Olin Umsted of Whitesboro; a daughter, Lisa Umsted of Collinsville; and
a brother, David Umsted of Collinsville.
Services for Mr. Walterscheid, an oil field worker, will be at 3
p.m. Sunday at the Sacred Heart Church in Muenster, under the direction
of Miller Funeral Home of Muenster. Burial will be at the Sacred
Heart Cemetery. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert
Walterscheid of rural Muenster; and sisters, Susan and Sandra Walterscheid
of rural Muenster.
