SHERMAN - Dorthell Grider McKinney passed away on Wednesday, May
21, 2008 in Boerne, following a lengthy illness.
Born November 23, 1920 in Van Alstyne to Jim V. and Edith Neathery
Grider, she attended local schools, graduating as salutatorian of the 1939
Van Alstyne High School class. On May 19, 1940, she married her high
school sweetheart, Ward Lynn McKinney in Sherman. Lynn and Dorthell
enjoyed over 60 years of marriage prior to his death in 2002. To
this union were born three daughters, Lynda, Vicki and Robin.
Following service in the Army Ari Corps during World War II, Mr.
McKinney began a career in sales, working for Jacques Power Saw Co., Harkwick-Etter
and eventually retiring from Reed Tool. His sales assignments necessitated
moves to various places, and the family lived in Detroit, Vernon, Corpus
Christi and California before returning to Sherman in 1958 where they eventually
retired.
Dorthell made friends wherever she went and continued to pursue
the college education that had been stalled with the beginning of a family
and her husband's job responsibilities. Her perseverance paid off,
as she was ultimately awarded a bachelor's and master's degrees from Austin
College where he college career first began in 1939-40.
Mrs. McKinney taught for several years at Sherman High School and
Grayson County Junior College, eventually retiring after serving many years
as a counselor at Sherman High School.
An accomplished artist, she enjoyed painting, playing bridge and
was an avid reader. Over the years, she and her husband traveled
extensively, including several visits abroad. At the time of her
death, Mrs. McKinney was a member of the First Methodist Church, Sherman.
Mrs. McKinney was preceded in death by her parents and husband;
and by her brother-in-law and nephew, Claude and James Douglas Riddle.
She is survived by her only sibling, Rachel Riddle of Sherman; daughters,
Lynda (Aubrey) Rangeley of Corpus Christi, Vicki (Pete) Doremus of Bergheim
and Robin (Steve) Shrout of Marble Falls. Also surviving are seven
grandchildren, Lee of Pennsylvania, Lynn (Vicki) Rangeley, Lisa (Art) Trevino
of Corpus Christi, Daniel Doremus of New York, Christopher (Laura) Boremus
of Boerne, Austin Shrout of Austin and Heather (David) Rodgers of Marble
Falls; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Pilot
Grove Cemetery under the direction of Flesher Funeral Home with Dr. Thomas
Peel officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to
a favorite charity.
