Van Alstyne Man Killed Monday Night Here in Car
Funeral services for Royce W. Cannon, 44, who was instantly
killed here Monday night when his car left the highway and overturned a
number of times, were held Wednesday afternoon from the Van Deren funeral
home with the Rev. Lloyd Mottley conducting. Burial was in the Van Alstyne
Mr. Cannon was born February 17, 1893 at Cannon, the
son of the late E.H. and Alice Cannon, Grayson county pioneers. He was
married to Miss Virginia Merritt of Trenton December 19, 1916. He was a
World War veteran having served in France almost two years. He was also
a member of the James Adams Post of the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife and one daughter, Miss Helen Cannon,
one sister, Mrs. J.H. Sheid, all of Van Alstyne, and two brothers, J.R.
Cannon of Calif., and J.E. Cannon of Pearshall.
Pallbearers were Gus Lewallen, Creed Taylor, Jim McLemore,
Roscoe Garver, Col Milam and Perry Waldrop.
Mr. Cannon was instantly killed Monday night about 8
o'clock when his car turned over about two miles north of town. The car
apparently turned over when he attempted to steer it back on the highway
after it hit the soft shoulders of the road. No one was with him and definite
details are not known.
