Walt Kinney's major league debut was with the Red Sox on July 26,
1918. He saw little action during the last five weeks of the season, but
did serve as one of Boston's batting practice pitchers in the World Series.
Kinney pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1919 and 1920, both
as a starter and reliever. During spring training in 1921, however,
he was banned from baseball for five years by Commissioner Landis for violating
his contract by joining an independent team that had offered him more money.
Kinney was able to return to baseball two years later. On May 9, 1923,
he became one of the few players to hit a home run in his final major league
at-bat.
