DOUBLE HANGING IN TEXAS.
Mrs. Sherman, Widow of the Murdered
Man, Witnessed the Executions.
Sherman, Texas. May 12. ? John Z. Carlisle
and Charles Luttrell
were hanged in the jail yard here at 2:06 P.M. to-day for the murder
of W.T. Sherman. Both died instantly, their necks being broken.
Mrs. Sherman, the widow of the murdered man, witnessed the execution.
Near Giddings, Texas, in 1886, ?Jim? Brown, afterward killed at
Garfield Park, Chicago, while Sheriff of Lee County was severely assaulted
by, it was supposed, men with whose misdeeds he had interfered. One
morning, ?Sam? Sparks suspected of complicity in the assault, was found
murdered. It was not until 1887 that an indictment was found against
John Carlisle and Ed Meyers. The latter, upon the evidence of ?Billie?
Sherman, got two years in State prison.
Carlisle, who had left the State, was not caught until February,
1891, at Hot Springs Ark. He was released on bond, fled, was recaptured,
and his trial set for May 2 1892. On April 28, Sherman, the principle
witness, was shot dead in his home in Denison. He was shot while
asleep, a charge of buckshot being sent through an open window.
This crime through various clues was traced to John Poe, John Carlisle,
Charles Luttrell and Frank Fogg as principals and accomplices.
Luttrell and Carlisle were convicted. The others have yet to be tried.
The condemned men carried their cases to every accessible court,
but failed in every instance.
