"Lamar Elementary School and Lamar Avenue were named for
Miribeau B. Lamar. The first Lamar school was built in 1890. Mirabeau was
the third president of the Texas Republic ..... He came to Texas as a volunteer
and joined Sam Houston's Army then went on to become president in 1838.
He had a deep interest in the public school system and urged Congress to
set aside land for future use of school.'
