Chapel School was located about 6 miles east of Tioga, just past the
Mt. Carmel church and down Scoggins Road about two miles. It was a
small county school located in the far southeast corner of Grayson
County. Grades 1 - 8 attended the one-room school.

There was a coat closet where students put their coats and
lunches in; there also was a library about the same size as the coat
were the toilets and the coal house. There was no running
for the students to use the drinking fountain, so they went to Clarence
and Minnie Baker's house to get water for the fountain.
Baughman, who started to school in 1938, graduated from Stiff
Chapel, and Mrs. Carmen Vaughn took him to Sherman where he graduated
with a county group of 8th graders.

Vaughn rode a horse to school, especially when it was raining because
of the muddy roads.
The school had a big pot-bellied, coal-burning stove.

The school :
20' x 30' building
wooden desks with metal runners that were screwed into the floor
There were two sets of desks with aisles between the rows and along
each side of the rows.
There were two out-door toilets, one for the girls and one for the boys.
Students were assigned to bring coal into the school building for the
next day and to empty the ashes from that day's fire.
It was a student's responsibility to clean the big blackboard each day.
There were pull-down maps on the wall.
