Joe Bob Sumrell
Well attended graveside services were held on June 29, 1987 in Melrose, New Mexico, for Joe Bob Sumrell, a long time Chandler Heights, Arizona resident who moved back to Texas, July 1, 1985 because of failing health. Joe was 94 on May 28th and was reportedly still entertaining others with his stories and good humor. He planned to ?go home? (Chandler Heights) tomorrow and never leave his chair again, except to go to the Chandler Heights Trading Post. Joe was born in Sherman, Texas in 1893 and had homesteaded at Apache, Arizona. He worked on the ranch where the Apache Chief Geronimo, surrendered. He also lived at the ?old adobes? at Greenfield and Ocotillo Rds before coming to Chandler Heights.
Survivors include sons, Clay of California, Ferd of Georgia, Gene of Louisiana and daughters June Hairston of Texas, Pearle Linder of Phoenix. Of his 5 grandchildren, Pat Bennett of Phoenix and Mike Sumrell of Georgia attended the service. Joe?s sister Rivers Chrust of Texas also survives. His family expressed a sincere thank you to friends who helped make his last two years of exile more bearable with their cards and notes.
