Wayne G. Baker
Sherman- Funeral services for Wayne Gilford Baker will be held at
10:00 am Monday, August 20 at Waldo Funeral Home. Paul Jennings of Grapevine,
Texas will officiate. Burial will follow at West Hill Cemetery with Jerry
Beard, Bill House, Rusty Sutherland, Chester Sutherland, Earl Cripe and
Delbert Clountz serving as pallbearers. Mr. Baker passed away Friday, August
17 at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center at the age of 81.
Wayne was born on October 7, 1925 in Whitesboro to the late Henry
and Ida (Lexton) Baker. He served in the Marine Corp during World War II,
stationed primarily in Hawaii. Wayne was assigned to the K9 Unit and also
boxed for the Marines. Wayne and Joyce Hicks married on March 2, 1957 in
Sherman. He owned and operated Baker Exterminating for 42 years and also
had several service stations in the Sherman area. Wayne enjoyed spending
time at Lake Texoma and flying airplanes as a pilot for the civil air patrol.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW and was a Baptist.
Mr. Baker is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce of Sherman;
two daughters, Sandra Griffin and her husband Jerry of Trophy Club and
Tonya Johnson and husband Tommy of Frisco; a granddaughter who took special
care of her ?Pa?, Erica Griffin of Rockwall; one sister, Pat Beard and
husband Jerry of Grapevine; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family
members. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Thomas,
and a twin brother, Wallace Baker.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday at Waldo
Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled
American Veterans.
