What's New?

Grimes County was created in 1846 from a portion of Montgomery County. The county was named for Jesse Grimes; one of Stephen F. Austin's Colonists , a Texas Declaration of Independence signer, and State Senator. The county seat is the town of Anderson; the present court house was built in 1894. Four prior court houses had been destroyed; one by wind and three by fire. In 2000, the population was 23,552 in a land area of 664 square miles, an average of 35.5 people per square mile.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY HISTORY BOOK
From Melinda Cagle:
"MCG&HS, Inc. currently is compiling our second family history book which is scheduled to be out in 2008. It will include family stories from old or greater Montgomery County during the period in which Grimes County still was part of Montgomery County, prior to 1846. There still is time to submit stories and photos for the new book. We would appreciate greatly your help in collecting any information and in making it known that stories and photos are still being collected. I'm hoping to find someone to write about the Germans from Russia who migrated into both counties. Would you know of anyone whom I could contact?"
