Welcome to Victoria, Texas

Welcome to Victoria!

"Yea, we have a goodly heritage", as our DAR Ritual prayer goes.. Victoria is the oldest city in Texas, a county that has deep early roots in this state.  We are part of the very Cradle of Texas history, having roots back in early Spain, Mexico and France.
In the formation of Texas as a state, our city is the only city in Texas to be able to claim having been actually ruled by all six governments that have had ruling power during the formation of Texas.  (Just one of our several claims to fame in our county history!)
Those governments are Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States of America and the Flag of the United States.

This city was originally named Guadalupe Victoria, Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe De Jesus, shortened eventually to the name we all it today, Victoria.

ith a history like ours, our chapter has long been involved in historic preservation, education, and patriotic endeavor.  Guadalupe Victoria Chapter has been involved in many projects on the local, State, and National levels. Some of the programs in which this Chapter has participated or sponsored over the years include the American History Essay Contest for area school students, the Good Citizen Award and Scholarship Essay Contest for area high school seniors, Service for Veterans, and Literacy Challenge programs. In addition to observing Constitution Week, we donate books and magazines to libraries, donate United States and Texas flags, contribute to the DAR schools which serve students who could not otherwise attend school and donate toward NSDAR sponsored Native American schools.

The Chapter participates in flag ceremonies, places wreaths, and participates in other patriotic events.  The chapter also recognizes local citizens for their contributions to the community  and encourages the conservation of our natural resources. Each year a scholarship is awarded to a deserving student at Victoria College, and the DAR Bronze Medal is awarded to the outstanding student in the Junior Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corp Program at Memorial High School - Stroman Campus.  We sponsor the Shadrack Barnes Society, C.A.R.

In addition to their educational and patriotic work, members are also active in Victoria area history, preservation, and genealogical research.  Individual members continue to be active in many areas of community service.  Under the leadership of the present Regent,
Carolyn Shannon, Guadalupe Victoria Chapter, NSDAR welcomes qualified new members. Please contact Carolyn for an invitation to become a member of our chapter.

Guadalupe Victoria Chapter has taken part in celebrations of freedom and commemorative events in Victoria for many years, including the placing of a granite monument on the Northeast corner of De Leon Square in 1936 to mark the original name of Main Street,
"La Calle de los Diez Amigos," or "The Street of the Ten Friends."
