Hayes County was named for noted Texas Ranger John Coffee Hays. Hays came to Texas with the wave of men who answered the call for volunteers to serve in the Texas Revolution. He arrived too late to take partin San Jacinto, but identified himself to Sam Houston. He joined the army of the Republic when Thomas J. Rusk was in command and under Colonel W. H. Karnes, he was assigned to Deaf Smith's company ranging the frontier, between San Antonio and the Rio Grande. After the battle of Plum Creek he was commissioned and given authority to raise a spy company.
