Czech SpringFest

Sunday, April 15, from 11 am to 7 pm , at the SPJST Lodge #88, 1435 Beall Street at 15th Street in the Heights area of Houston.

Jana Mikulcova, master artist from Ostrozska Novy Ves in the Czech Republic, will demonstrate traditional egg decorating (known as kraslice) at the 17th annual Czech SpringFest. Jana will not only have decorated eggs available for purchase, but will also customize egg designs for you during the festival.

Kovanda's Czech Band will perform from 11am-2 pm, followed by the renowned West High School Junior Historian Dancers at 2:30 pm, and The Texas Legacy Czech Band from 3 - 7 pm, for your listening and dancing pleasure.

West High School Junior Historians, organized in 1973, have evolved into an accomplished dance group, performing annually at WestFest in West, the State Fair of Texas, the Salado Christmas Stroll, and the Ennis Polka Festival. Their repetoire includes the Moravian Beseda, the Seven Step Polka, the Schottische, the Herr Schmidt, Na te louce zelene (In the Green Meadow - a Czech circle waltz), Tancuj! (Dance! - a Slovak polka), and the Gustad.

A traditional Czech Sunday dinner will be served, plus sausage, soup, kolaches and other pastries. Cultural booths, silent auction, Country Store, plant booth, children's games, and numerous vendors provide opportunities to enjoy Czech culture and history.

Admission is $7 for adults; children 10 and under are free. The Czech dinner is $8 for adults; children 10 and under for $6.

Proceeds benefit the non-profit CHS Harris County genealogy/cultural library

A number of our copies of family histories were damaged when Hurricane Ike hit the CHS Harris County Library. We would appreciate replacement copies if you are able to provide them. If you have not yet shared your family history with the CHS Harris County Library, please consider making your hard work available to other Czech-Texans.

A partial listing of books available at the Harris County Chapter Library has been added to the Library page.

Who We Are

The Harris County Chapter CHS is dedicated to the study and preservation of Czech genealogy, history, culture and language.

The Harris County Chapter maintains significant research materials (browse our holdings!) in the Chapter Library at 4117 Willowbend Blvd. in southwest Houston. Come and research your ancestry with the help of our volunteer staff.

Harris County Chapter members voluntarily staff and maintain the Library and Archives, providing resources and personalized help for hands-on research. With your support and the continued success of our annual Czech SpringFest and Soup Tasting, we will maintain our Chapter building and Library to support your interest in genealogical research and our Czech heritage.
