Harris County Chapter - Czech Heritage Society of TexasChristiana's Kroj Christiana's authentic kroj (Czech national costume) comes from Chodsko, the only area in Bohemia where folk clothing is still preserved to this day. It is reserved only for exceptional occasions and is seen predominately in the region surrounding Domažlice, southwest of Plzen. People there still wear kroje to church or on special occasions. The ring of flowers on Christiana's head is symbolic of youth. Married women cover their heads with traditional scarves. The bright colored fringed scarf around Christiana's neck is beautifully woven, and typically worn in the Chodsko region. The scarf is always tucked under the colorful flowery ribbon waistband. White blouses with ballooning sleeves, tied just above the elbow, are typically worn with red dresses or skirts. The dresses and skirts are always accented with various types of colored trim and lace. On very special occasions, intricately designed, beaded vests are worn with the skirts. An apron of brocade is the lovely signature of the Chodsko kroj. The brocade apron is covered with colorful flowers and wheat. The apron is always bordered with lace and is topped by the contrasting waistband which is tied into a large bow in back. The waistband serves as a beautiful accent to the kroj. Christiana is holding a lovely embroidered handkerchief. The handkerchief is traditionally seen held by women and girls in kroj. During Chodsko folklore festivals, the handkerchiefs are raised high in the air as performers sing and sway to the music of the "dudy", or Chodsko bagpipe. Last but not least, red hose, or "puncochy" and low heeled, decorative shoes, topped with bows are typical of the authentic Chodsko kroj. ![]() | ![]() MARK YOUR CALENDARS 2010 Membership Dues - due by January 1, 2010 Soup Tasting 2009: October 19, 2009, T J Sokol - Houston Hall, 1314 West Patton St. CHS-Harris County Chapter Membership Meeting, November 8, 2009, Speaker: James (Jim) Kovar, president of the Fayette Co. chapter CHS State Fall Membership Meeting, Election of State Officers: November 21, 2009 Christmas Open House, December 5, 2009, HCC Library, 4117 Willowbend Blvd, 2-6 pm . . . more ![]() |
