Judge Steve Latham, 83, of Whitney, died Sunday, June 3, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 1 p. m., Wednesday, June 6th, at Hillcrest Garden of Memories near Hillsboro.
He was born Feb. 4, 1918, in Eden, Texas, to John E. and Lennie Ficklin Latham. He was a 1935 graduate of Mason High School and won state in high school boys tennis singles. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1947 and University of Texas Law School in 1951. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with Army Air Corps Ion Aug. 31, 1940. He flew 40 combat missions in Italy and received two air medals. He retired from the service as a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserve. He married Virginia Banks on April 9, 1942. He practiced law in Wichita Falls and Whitney until appointed State District Judge in 1966 by Texas Gov. John Connally. He was judge of the 66th District Court longer than any other judge and retired in 1983. He then was certified as a State Senior District Judge for the state of Texas and served in many courts in the state before he fully retired in 1988. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed golf and fishing. Mr. Latham was preceded in death by his wife on Aug, 29, 1989; sister, Julia Elizabeth Latham; and brothers, John Latham Jr. and Max A. Latham.
