Hello, my name
is Henry J. Hall of Green Valley, Arizona. I was
born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I have many relatives,
both close and distant, at rest at Shelby Cemetary.
I am the son of Carlton Brewer Hall and wife Marie P.
Hall, and younger brother of Kenneth B. Hall all of
whom are buried in your beautiful Shelby Chapel Cemetery.
It brings me great comfort knowing that they are at eternal rest
close to God there at Shelby Cemetery. It is a very good
feeling and I applaud all responsible for it's continuance and
preservation.
Both my mother and father were born in Athens. My father
was the son of Henry B. Hall and wife Artie E. Hall who
are also buried there at Shelby Cemetery.
Ruby Green, also buried at Shelby Cemetary, was married to
my mother's brother, Macon Green.
I forever will remember as a young man driving weekly with my
Aunt (father's sister) Ruth Lee (husband Judge Rubin Lee of
Athens) and staying for hours sitting on a bench she had placed
near her mother and father's grave. Also I remember how she
used to plead with her husband (Judge Lee) to try to get the
county to pipe water out to the cemetery. We used to carry
loads of water out to the burial sites, gallons of it in the
trunk of the car or bed of the truck.
It was a humble santuary for Aunt Ruth, and a time for
reflection. As a young man living in OKC I used to work
summers out at Uncle Rubin's ranch north of Athens. I would
always relish the break from chores to ride out to Shelby with
Aunt Ruth. I could count on her rewarding my water carrying
tasks with a stop at the Dairy Queen west of town. Oh how
she loved to spend time there, sweeping the grave sites while I
was tormenting the red ants. Sometimes we would pack a
snack, but mostly water for the grave site flowers. It was
unfortunate that my Aunt Ruth wasn't buried there, as she as I
were always at awe at the peaceful serenity and beauty of the
both the Chapel and cemetery.
We walked and sat for hours on end in the cool evenings.
She would talk and tell stories of almost every person buried
there. At that young age little did I know that someday I
would wish if only I had had a tape recorder at the time.
This evening I just came across your Internet site. Thank
you very much for the time and effort you've put forth in
presenting and disseminating such invaluable information of those
loved ones buried there.
I can also remember sitting on my grandmother's (mother's mother,
Mrs. Green) porch on 410 E. Tyler Street watching them construct
the Athens water tower across Tyler Street. Decades ago, I
found that the large beautiful home has been replaced with a
gasoline station. Nothing stays the same I've
learned. Sorry for the rambling...
I hope I've correctly submitted the proper information. I
hope and very much look forward to someday re-visiting Shelby
Chapel and Cemetary. My last visit was when we buried my
brother. I am hoping that it, at least, has stayed the
same.
