To The Men and Women of World War II.
It is to you-those who have been chosen to serve and those who have answered the call voluntarily- that we owe a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid. Without your devotion to duty and your sacrifices of blood and toll, we should today be bound in the chains of slavery, instead of a nation of free, liberty loving people. Only a great nation such as ours, with our many branches of service, each made up of the flower of our youth, who so willingly cast aside all thought of self and took up the arms of battle, could be victorious in the battle for the right against might.
We trust that the veterans of this war will become the buddies of the veterans of World War I, in order that we, who have a common cause, may band together for the common good of all.
May the youth that comes after you, ever hold sacred the ideals and the examples of courage and faithfulness to duty that you have shown your many sacrifices for the honor of mankind. It is our earnest hope and prayer that they shall not be called upon to follow in the paths that you have so nobly trod for them.

Greetings to the GI's From Henderson County:
As Post Commander of Brady Shelton Post 173 of the American Legion, I want to compliment you boys and girls for the wonderful job you have done while members of the Armed Forces of the United States. Whether you served on foreign soil or here in the States, you have each done your job in a manner that has made all of us here at home, proud of you and the country that you represent.
I know that each of you will cherish this book, and in the years to come, it will serve as a reminder of the price that was paid that we might continue to enjoy the privileges of this free land of ours. Again, let me say that Henderson County is proud of you, it can never repay you for the hardships and the sacrifices, and its citizens shall, through the years, continue to be grateful for the service that you have rendered to our country.

To the Citizens of Henderson County:
For the hardships you have endured, for the sacrifices you have made, we thank you. For the smiles you have worn when horizons were dark and days seemed long, and for the victorious attitude you displayed in speech of your courage and character of Henderson County, as worthy Americans.
You bought bonds, many of you, when there was temptation to invest in ventures of fabulous cash returns. Scrap metal, used clothing, paper, tin cans and other called-for material things you have contributed in keeping with good citizens. The good women of this County gave hours of time and skill in making bandages and other needed medical supplies when it was difficult to find moments away from crowded duties at home. For your loyalty through the war, for your ever-abiding faith in the ultimate victory that now is your reward, may be established facts that you have "kept the faith" be an abiding comfort to you through all history.
Comes now the time when our "brave men" return. May it be your happy privilege to help make the place for them everlasting. Everlasting in the fundamental issues of life which would most assuredly involve an opportunity to work, to worship, to read and speak as thinketh in his own heart.

To The Henderson County Veterans of World War II:
The Athens Schools, including the Board of Education, the Superintendent, the Faculty and past and present student bodies through me want to express our sincerest appreciation to the men who have recently served in the Armed Forces of our Country. More especially do we want to the men of this County and Community to understand that we realize the hardships and the sacrifices that each one of them has made so that we might continue to enjoy the American way of life. Most of us did not realize until Pearl Harbor that we there were deadly enemies of civilization all over the world who want to destroy our kind of life and put its place an autocratic dictatorship that would enslave mankind.
We humbly rejoice with each of you in the glorious victory that you, with sweat, blood and tears, have won. We want to join with you in fervent prayer that mankind, as a result of your efforts, may be spared from another destructive holocaust perhaps many times as terrible that the one through which we have just passed. You, then, have had a part in saving our American way of life and have paved the way for our statesmen to set up machinery that will prevent future wars. To have had just a small part in such a glorious achievement as this gives the American soldier a place in history that is immortal and which becomes more glorious as time marches down the unending corridor of the future.
We are all justly proud of the achievements of those of you who have attended the Athens Schools. This information has just been given me that twenty-two of the County's eighty heroes who paid the supreme sacrifice were graduates or students of this school. The students and faculty of this school during the actual years of the struggle did more than their part in the various drives that required money and efforts to keep the wheels of war moving. In fact Henderson County and Athens gave the best they had and most certainly carried more than their share of the load in the terrible struggle that has just spent its force.
