News Story Recalls Time When Thirteen Enlisted
In Army
Thirteen citizens of Henderson county, many of them still active
residents here, responded to the call for volunteers back in 1898
for service in the Spanish-American War, a story appearing in a
current issue of the Tyler Courier-Times revealed. The county
citizens were members of Company K which was organized at Tyler.
Their names and the occupants listed when they enrolled for army
service follow:
William L. Faulk, Athens insurance agent,
seargeant; Charles A. Spencer, Athens,
cattleman, and
Albert E. Jones, student, were named corporals
of the company; others enlisted men include, Albert F. Bass,
Athens insurance agent; E. O. Hall, Athens
farmer; Charles M. Hancock, Athens farmer; Tobe Johnson.
Malakoff cattleman; J. H. Rice, Chandler farmer;
T. B. McDonald, Athens salesman; J. W. Morrison,
Athens brickman; John W. McLeod, Murchison
farmer; Charles A. Green, Athens student; and
Lawrence A. Rice, Chandler farmer.
