Born June 12th, 1855, J. J. Carson is a native of the
state of
Ohio in Meiggs county. When still a small boy,
his parents moved
to Illinois. This was in the last year of the
Civil War. The family
settled at Mount Erie, Wayne county, at which
place Mr. Carson
grew to manhood. He received a high school
education which
was completed at Shawneetown, III. After
finishing his school
work he mastered the tinners trade and afterward
engaged in
the hardware business at Mount Erie, III., in
which business he
continued for 45 years.
Physicians advising a change of climate
for Mrs. Carson, whose health was not good, Mr.
Carson sold
out his business and came to Henderson county,
and took up
residence at Malakoff, settling there in 1911. He
purchased a
large block of land near Malakoff and also opened
a hardware
business, in the town, but later disposed of the
business and gave
his attention to the large lumber business which
he is now conducting.
In Wayne county, III., where Mr. Carson spent the
greater portion of his
life, he was active and a public man and held
nearly every office within
the gift of the people in his home county.
He early became identified with the Methodist
church and has
served on the board of Stewards for many years.
He has been twice married. His first wife being
Miss Mary Mendenhall. His second union was to
Miss Alice Ray Seneff,
to whom he was married in 1891. Two children by
his first wife and three
by his second wife have all received college
training. In the comparatively
short residence of Mr. Carson, in the county, he
has won for himself a
place among our foremost men of affairs. He was
largely instrumental
in the development of the extensive lignite
industry in the Malakoff
section and is still a large owner in lignite
properties there.
Public spirited in a large way, he has cheerfully
accepted the gratuitous
services thrust upon him in the interest of the
public. An enthusiastic
booster for his adopted home town and county, he
is ever ready to
champion every move for the advancement of the
section. He meets
the world with a friendly greeting and cheerful
smile that characterizes
the optimist and that wins for him the friendship
of all whom he meets.
