Mr. J. W. Wylie, general merchant of Poynor, was born at
Fosterville, Anderson County, December 11, 1883. He was
reared on the farm and received his early schooling in the rural
schools of his county and finished his studies at Columbia
College, at Van Alstyne, Texas.
Coming to Henderson County in 1908, he engaged in general
merchandising at Poynor, which business he is still conducting
and that bars the distinction of being the oldest continuous
business under one management in the thriving little town, and
speaks much for the business capacity of its founder whose name
and business is synonymous of his home town, with whose interests
he has been so closely identified for twenty years.
Mr. Wylie, has a pleasing sincere personality, which coupled with
honest fair dealing in business matters has won for him a host of
friends and established a patronage that has permitted the growth
of his business step by step, in company with the progress of his
He was married May 4th 1913, to a Henderson County girl, Miss
Josie Parmer, daughter of the late J. P. Parmer, who was one of
the successful well-to-do farmers of the county. They have
two children, the oldest, a girl of ten years and a boy of five
Mr. Wylie is a member of the Christian church; is a mason and has
received the Council and Chapter degrees and is affiliated with
the Jacksonville lodge of that order. He promptly
discharges his duties in the religious, social, and educational
activities of his home community, being ever ready to sponsor any
move for the betterment of his town and county, and has been
particularly active in the upbuilding of the local school, being
for some years on the board of trustees.
