This is a very old cemetery. Due to its location, burials stopped in the early 1900's, and people started using the Ridgeway cemetery. Some of the
people in this cemetery does not even show up in the census.

Oakland cemetery is located in the west part of the county. From I 30, turn north on FM road 2653, you will pass through Ridgeway, stay on 2653.
You will come to the Oakland church. The road going to the cemetery is next to this church. You will be going through some gates, across some
pastures to get to the cemetery. Might want to stop at home nearby and ask. There might have been one or two graves added after I did the
cemetery.

He was born in Tennessee, May 18, 1828. Came to Texas near 45 years ago and has lived in this community ever since. He was a hero of both the Mexican and Civil wars. Brooks, E. W. - 1859 - 1926 (Obituary - E. W. Brooks, pioneer of Hopkins County, died this morning at the Long Hospital where he had been
critically ill for the past few days. He was near his 67th birthday, having been born in Upshur County in 1850. He moved to Hopkins County in1867, and later married Miss Addie Lindley, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J. R. (Riley) Lindley, who still survives him. Early in life his father died and left young Brooks. At the time of his death he was the largest owner of cattle in Hopkins county, and for several years made a specialty of White Faced Herefords. He owns several thousands acres of farm and ranch land, and is one of the largest tax payers in the county. He has no children and no living brothers and sisters. A little more than a year ago, he moved from his ranch near Ridgeway to his home on Connally street. Funeral services to be held at his home with his pastor, Rev. J. E. Evans, conducting the service. Burial to take place in Oakland cemetery.)

Herman, James F. - b. 31 Jan. 1828, d. 7 Feb. 1914 (Obituary - James F. Herman of Hopkins County, died at his home, eight miles northeast of
Cumby, Feb. 7, 1914. It is said that he was among the first farmers in Texas to raise cotton. He was one of the oldest subscribers to the Galveston News, having been a subscriber ever since he came to Texas. Mr. Herman was born in Lauderdale County, Alabama, Jan. 31, 1828, and at the
age of 21 moved to Victoria County, Texas, in 1849, where he lived for several years. Prior to the civil war he became a member of the Texas
Rangers, and in this service participated in many encounters with the Indians. When the civil war began, he was transferred to Gen. Bedford Forrests Cavalry where he saw much hard fighting. In 1867, he moved to Hopkins County and bought land in what was then known as Prim Hill neighborhood where he lived the remainder of his life. Mr. Herman was twice married and is survived be a widow and six children. He was buried
in Oakland cemetery near where he lived, conducted by Rev. Nicholson. Tom Young and wife of Como, Mrs. Susie Potts and son, James, of Denton; Mrs. Lizzie Stewart of Mt Zion; B. M.
