( Obituary - John E. Grant of Tarrant, passed away June 11, 1914, surrounded by his 
family. He was born in 1845 (sic) was 68 years old; married in 1865 to Miss Maryette 
Matthews of old Tarrant. To their union were born five children, two of whom survive 
him, Luther Grant and Mrs. Jno. Irons. He was a confederate soldier, enlisting in the 
23rd Texas Cavalry in 1863 and served with honor until the surrender in 1865. His 
remains were interred in the Old Tarrant cemetery, services conducted by Rev. Voss.
