HOLLIS A. TARVER

Hollis Andrew Tarver known only as “Tarver”, was 76 years old and passed away on January 20, 2011 in the East Texas Medical Center- Tyler.

He was born in Melder, Louisiana, on July 18, 1934, to Lillie Mae and Sam Tarver.

He started as a cab driver in Arkansas when he was 15, then at age 16, he was driving a truck across country. At age 40, he went to work for an underground utility contractor as an operator and supervisor, where he met and married his wife, Paula Joubert Tarver of 36 years. They raised 7 children, he had 4, she had 1, and they had 2 together. They raised their first set of grandchildren with their babies. He was a family man, who very much loved his family and the people around him, he never met a stranger. His last 12 years of working, he worked for Cordell Brick Company in Houston in maintenance. He always loved working, just being able to get up in the morning and go to work. When he wasn’t able to work anymore, it was like something died in him, but he had a thirst for life and his children and grandchildren and he lived through them. He moved his family around a lot, said he was part Gypsy, but when we moved to Crockett in 2002, this was the final move. He was happier here than anywhere he had ever lived. Shortly after he moved here, he gave his life to the Lord, and was very strong in his faith. He was a member of the Grapeland Baptist Church. His faith is what helped him recover from the loss of his beloved son Christopher, who died in 1997, when he was almost 22. His ashes will be interred there with Christopher in Houston. Tarver was a wonderful husband, a great father, a good brother and friend to all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.
