Calloway Hodge Caldwell

Calloway H. Caldwell was born November 1845, in Knox County, Tennessee. He was the seventh of eight children. His mother was living alone with her children in 1850.

In various records, both the given name and surname are found in a variety of spellings, including Calvin, Calaway, Colwell and Coldwell. He is found in census records in 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920.

During the civil war, Caldwell enlisted in the Union Army. He was a private in the Seventh Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry.

On July 19, 1866, Callaway married Rachel Hubbs in Union County, Tennessee. They had three children who were named James, Bernette and John. Rachel died in 1871. Callaway next married Thersia Ann Hubbs on January 26, 1873, in Union County, Tennessee. Thersia was the sister of Rachel Hubbs - they were the daughters of James M. Hubbs and Elizabeth Atkins. Thersia and Cal had three children: Cordelia, Albert, and Charles Robert.

On January 13, 1891, Calloway Caldwell filed for an invalid pension. He was still living in Tennessee at the time. Between 1891 and 1900, the family migrated to Hunt County, Texas, where in 1900 they are found living in Precinct 2. The Caldwell family are also listed in the 1910 and 1920 census, as living in Precinct 8, Hunt County. This was in the Donelton Community. The photo above was taken at their farm.

Cal died July 7, 1926, in Hunt County. Thersia Caldwell filed for a widow's pension on July 31, 1926. She died September 20, 1938. Both are buried in the Donelton Cemetery. Donelton
