Greenville Evening Banner, Monday, September 19, 1921

Mrs. Mary E. Spencer passed away Sunday night at 10 o’clock following an illness of two years. Although her passing away was a dark hour to many loving hearts one touch of comfort was her release from pain.

She had been a member of the Methodist church since 1886.

Mrs. Spencer was born in Clarksville, Texas, Nov. 16, 1844, and was married to James M. Spencer of Ashboro, N. C., July 14, 1864. To this union four children, Herbert, Winston, Carl and Jessie, all of whom were at her bedside, also two sisters, Mrs. James M. McLeod of this city, and Mrs. J. D. Hargrave of Rotan, Texas, also survive her.

The home will miss the face and voice of her who was its ministering angel; whose hands were never too tired of their burden; whose feet never failed in their mission of mercy; whose every thought was for the good of those about her.

The funeral services will be conducted at the residence Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock by Rev. C. M. Simpson, and Rev. Egger. The burial will be at East Mount cemetery. The active pall bearers will be Naud Burett (sic Burnett), Will Burnett, James A. McSpadden, J. W. Birdsong, Joe W. Bowman, Ellis Birdsong. Honorary pall bearers: Prof. J. M. McLeod, J. M. Gee, Geo. Simonds, Sr, F. V. Ende, W. B. Wise, W. M. Arnold.
